Jan 13, 2016 · Mid July seems to be about the time you can actually get anywhere on the higher trail systems. I've both hiked and hunted quite a bit of the 560 GMU including both wilderness areas discussed above. Not as many elk as there used to be but are there some are huntable elk. The key is always to keep the wind right. They will often stay in areas where the wind funnels to them from multiple directions. The angle that you come to them is very important, for that reason. Since they are usually in bigger herds than they early season 5 cows and a bull scenario, they are harder to hunt.Jay is right. The AR-10 and the .308 are legal, but the AR-10 is a heavy gun.
