The lubricant used has nothing to do with the casting or gear materials, it's mostly the gasketing and sealing features. Units that use a gasket to seal the casting halves may have a hard time sealing when a gear oil is used.
Dealer replaced all 3 seals and used LR3 again. After another 2 years the impeller seal is leaking again. I replaced the seal in the spring and I am using Motorcraft Synthetic gear oil 75W-140 (GL5 spec). Ariens says not to use grease because it throws off the gears. My 926LE calls for Sten Mix Grease, I'm guessing for the friction disc shaft and the auger. I just use regular automotive grease for that. For the auger gear case (I also have aluminum) it calls for Ariens L2 which has now been superseded by Ariens L3 synthetic severe-duty gear lube.
