IMO the upgraded basic Kevin Lee French irons/chisels are worth the price. I have some $120 irons but I still use the upgraded basic French irons. The Kevin Lee most basic irons/chisels do seem to be polished AliExpress ones, but the polish does make them work better out of the box. However I recommend the upgraded basics.

I use my Wuta pricking irons constantly and am very happy with them. I almost always use the #8. I have 7, 8 and 10. It's probably just a personal preference. I consistently use both the obverse and reverse irons. I prick both sides of the leather and use the obverse on the front and the reverse on the back.

I use the 4mm irons paired with 0.4mm thread in most cases. I would not say that pricking irons are superior to diamond chisels only that they are more preferred tools for European style leather crafting.
