To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary). Rig a spark tester and have the gap set to 7/16". Hook up the timing light to the #1 plug wire.

You need to warm up the engine for around 15 minutes before examining the timing light attached to the spark plug. At this point, you can inspect the reading on the timing light to determine the current timing of the engine. Depending on the model you’re running, the timing may vary.

To get the engine out of quick start disconnect the white/black wire and ground the white/black coming from the power pack. This will put the engine into normal operation. It is a long screw with a rubber cap, starboard side, behind the top end of the vertical throttle lever. Spec is 28 degrees at full advance @ 4500 RPM in gear, on the boat on the lake. It appears that on my 1993 Johnson 25hp, one has to set the Joe Reeves method at 0 degrees off the factory specified maximum spark advance. I will re-set it with the Joe Reeves Method tomorrow to 30 degrees, that is, the Joe Reeves Method but minus 0 degrees.
